Embodiment Construction

[0064] Referring now to the drawings, wherein like numerals indicate like parts throughout the several views, there is shown and described an electric motor assembly 20 and methods 100 , 200 for manufacturing the electric motor assembly 20 .

[0065] figure 1 A schematic cross-sectional view of a housing 11 and a stator 12s of a general electric motor 10 is shown. As mentioned above, the stator 12s is generally made of flat metal laminations 12 stacked together with enamelled copper wire (not shown) wound on the inwardly extending fingers 19 of the laminations 12 . Such as figure 1 As shown, the housing 11 may be generally circular in cross-section, or may take other shapes (e.g., rectangular), but in most cases the housing 11 will have a generally cylindrical (or appear circular in cross-section Shaped) inner surface 11is, which coincides with the substantially cylindrical outer surface 15s of the stator 12s. The housing 11 also has a plurality of lugs or mounting points 1...

Abstract

Motor assemblies fastened using polymer only and methods of making the same. An electric motor assembly includes a housing having a generally cylindrical inner surface, the inner surface defining a generally cylindrical cavity within the housing; a stator operably disposed within the generally cylindrical cavity, the stator comprising a plurality of stacked laminations wherein each lamination has an outer circumferential edge and a plurality of finger elements extending inwardly; and a polymer layer disposed between the substantially cylindrical outer surface of the stator and the substantially cylindrical inner surface of the housing, thereby securing the stator to the housing by a polymer. A method of manufacturing an electric motor assembly includes arranging a stator within a housing such that a gap is defined between the stator and the housing and the stator is not directly connected to the housing and substantially filled with a polymer so that the stator can be secured to the housing only by the polymer.

Description

technical field [0001] The present disclosure relates to motor assemblies using only polymers to secure a stator to a motor housing, and methods of making such motor assemblies. Background technique [0002] A common electric motor has a shaft attached to a rotatable rotor which is nested within a stator which is in turn housed within a housing. The rotor usually has an overall cylindrical shape and the stator usually has a hollow cylindrical shape with an inner surface that is cylindrical (to match the size and shape of the rotor) and an outer surface that is usually also cylindrical (to match the interior of the housing or otherwise assembled in it). [0003] Stators are usually made of flat circular metal laminations stacked together. Each lamination has a plurality of inwardly extending fingers, with some (or all) of the laminations having a plurality of ears or tabs extending outward from the circular outer edge of the laminations. These ears or tabs are used to mech...
