Abstract

A system and method for dynamically stopping an engine cylinder of an engine equipped with a cylinder deactivation system that controls torsional vibrations in the engine while stopping the cylinder using a computer that sets a program through a control range of a desired ignition density and engine vibration frequency. The computer dynamically determines a cylinder firing pattern that provides a desired firing density while optimizing cost function norms within a control range of engine vibration frequencies. A cylinder deactivation system in the engine is then controlled using the determined cylinder firing pattern.

Background technique [0002] Modern engines generally rely on aftertreatment systems to reduce controlled vehicle emissions. However, diesel engine aftertreatment systems require elevated component temperatures, typically in excess of 200°C, in order to effectively reduce emissions. Cylinder deactivation (CDA) has been shown to be a means of achieving fuel savings and improved aftertreatment thermal management in low to medium load diesel engine operating conditions through lower pump work and air-to-fuel ratio, respectively.
