Embodiment Construction
[0021] Figure 1 is a schematic cross-sectional view of a part of a liquid crystal display device comprising a liquid crystal cell 1 in which a twisted nematic liquid crystal material 2 is located between two support plates, or substrates 3 and 4, such as glass or quartz substrates, In this exemplary embodiment there are select electrodes 5 and data electrodes 6 . In this case, the liquid crystal material (such as MLC3700 from Merck) has positive optical anisotropy, positive dielectric anisotropy and low threshold voltage. If desired, the device includes polarizers (not shown), the polarization directions of which are, for example, mutually perpendicular. The device also includes alignment layers 7, 8 for orienting the liquid crystal material on the inner walls of the substrate so that the twist angle is eg 270°. The display device is of the transmissive type, but active switching elements may also be provided and connected to the image electrodes to drive the electrodes.
