Embodiment Construction

[0111] The identification device according to the invention will be described within the scope of a specific application, namely a clock application. However, it will be understood that the invention applies equally to any other electronic device in which one wishes to enter data by means of a finger or tracing tool. It will also be understood that the nature and composition of the input field of the identification device is not conclusive. Thus, although the input area is defined within the scope of the present invention as comprising a capacitive type sensor, it will be readily understood that any other type of sensor may be used, such as optical, ohmic, inductive sensors, surface acoustic wave propagation sensors (SAW) , or any other type of sensor that can be activated by a finger or a tracing tool in order to generate a signal that can be used to extract topological and geometric data about traces performed on the input area.

Abstract

The invention concerns a method and an electronic device for recognising characters manually traced on an input zone (10) comprising a plurality of sensors (15) each capable of being activated by a finger or a tracing instrument (13). The method consists in comparing the manual ink trace of a character (100) produced on the input zone (10) with an assembly of characters of a predetermined set of characters. The invention is characterised in that each character of the set of characters is represented by at least a predetermined model representing a way by which said character can be traced, and a model representing the manner of production by which the manual tracing of the character (100) has been produced on the input zone (10). The models comprise at least topological parameters representing the topology of the character, namely, in particular: the number of strokes (A, B, C, D, ...) used for tracing the character; the one- or two-dimensional type of each of said strokes (A, B, C, D, ...); and the composition of each stroke of two-dimensional type, namely the number of segments (A1, A2, B1, B2, ...) forming the stroke and the rectilinear or curved character of each segment. The models further comprise, as the case may be, geometrical parameters (phi, phi1, phi2, alpha) representing the evolution of the angular orientation of the tracing of the segment and of the geometrical parameters (P0, P1, P2) representing the position of the stroke on the input zone.

Description

technical field [0001] The invention relates to a method for recognizing handwritten characters on an input field and an electronic device for carrying out the method. Background technique [0002] Within the scope of the present invention, "character" means any alphanumeric character (A, B, C, . . . , 1, 2, 3 .. .), punctuation marks (?, !, :, ..), or symbol characters (+, -, *, #, ...). By extension, it will also mean any trace other than a trace of alphanumeric or symbolic characters, to which specific commands are associated, such traces being defined as control characters in the following description. In particular these control characters are intended to allow certain specific commands like movement of the cursor, deletion of previously entered characters, switching between uppercase and lowercase letters, etc. [0003] Various schemes are already known which allow the recognition of characters drawn by hand on an input field. Such a solution is particularly useful ...
