Embodiment Construction

[0047] The present invention is a spread spectrum data communication system suitable for use in relatively noisy environments, such as AC power lines. Two different embodiments of the spread spectrum data communication system of the present invention are disclosed herein. A first embodiment, also referred to as a fast embodiment, comprises a transmitter and receiver pair capable of relatively high speed data communication. The second embodiment, also called the reliable embodiment, is a transmitter and receiver pair that communicates at a lower data rate than the first embodiment, but with higher reliability. Both embodiments of the present invention are particularly suitable for use in environments including modems conforming to the CEBus communication standard. Fast embodiments are capable of sending data at rates much higher than what the CEBus standard is currently capable of. The CEBus standard is formulated by the Electronics Industries Association, also known as the E...

Abstract

A spread spectrum data communication system utilizing a modulation technique referred to as differential code shift keying (DCSK) transmits data in the form of time shifts between consecutive circularly rotated waveforms of length T transmitted during each symbol period which is divided into a plurality of shift indexes with each shift index representing a particular bit pattern. The spreading waveform is rotated by an amount in accordance with the data to be transmitted or is conveyed in the difference between two consecutive rotations. A correlator employing a matched filter having a template of the chirp waveform pattern is used to detect the amount of rotation of the chirp within the received signal for each symbol.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to data communication systems, and more particularly to spread spectrum communication systems using differential code shift keying to transmit and receive data. Background technique [0002] Improving communication reliability and security using spread spectrum communication techniques is well known and growing in popularity. Spread spectrum communication transmits data using a spectral bandwidth much larger than the bandwidth of the data to be transmitted. Among other advantages, this technique provides more reliable communications in environments where high narrowband noise, spectral distortion, and impulsive noise are present. Spread spectrum communication systems typically use correlation techniques to identify incoming signals. [0003] Spread spectrum communication systems are commonly used in military environments to overcome high energy narrowband hostile jamming. In a business or home environment, this technolo...
