Abstract

A two-stroke engine, especially for a portable handheld work apparatus such as motor-driven chain saws, cutoff machines or the like, has a combustion chamber which is configured in a cylinder and is delimited by a piston moving upwardly and downwardly. The two-stroke engine includes transfer channels which open into the crankcase with openings and fluidly connect the crankcase to the combustion chamber at specific positions of the piston. The two-stroke engine includes an intake channel for supplying an air / fuel mixture into the crankcase via an inlet and is connected to an air filter. At least one air channel supplies additional combustion air into at least one transfer channel. For a good load-independent air / fuel mixture ratio, it is provided that the length of the intake channel is up to 60% of the length of the clean air path; and, the length of the clean air path is the mean channel length from the air filter to the opening of a transfer channel into the crankcase.
