Embodiment I

[0039] This example describes the difference between performing the oxidation of an amine in the presence of bicarbonate without temperature control as required by the invention (run A) compared to the practice of the invention (run B).

[0040] In both cases the batch size was 1000 grams. The reactor was a 3000 ml glass vessel, stirred with a Teflon blade at the end of the mixing handle. The reactor was secured from above so that a cold water bath or electric heating mantle could be placed on the bottom and sides of the reactor to control the temperature as required. The temperature was monitored by a thermometer immersed in the reaction. Add water and sodium bicarbonate and mix, add weighed amine to reactor and begin constant stirring. Adjust the temperature of each batch and add hydrogen peroxide as directed. The reaction time was recorded from the addition of hydrogen peroxide.

[0041] In operation A, the profile of the reaction temperature is as follows:

Abstract

Mono-long chain amine oxide surfactants can be prepared containing active levels of greater than about 30%, by weight of amine, and with low nitrite and nitrosamine levels and low levels of residual hydrogen peroxide when oxidized under controlled temperature conditions in the presence of bicarbonate material present at levels less than about 2.5%, by weight of amine, and without the presence of phase-modifying solvents.

Description

field of invention [0001] The present invention relates to improvements in the chemistry for the preparation of mono-long chain amine oxide surfactants such that the active content of the surfactant is greater than about 30% by weight of the amine and the nitrite, nitrosamine and The level of residual hydrogen peroxide is suppressed. Background of the invention [0002] The preparation of mono-long chain amine oxide surfactants by oxidation of tertiary amines is of great commercial interest. This surfactant is widely used in commercial cleaning compositions, especially high sudsing dishwashing detergents. The concentrated solutions are particularly useful in formulating concentrated liquid detergent compositions which are currently favored by many consumers and generally contain less water than conventional detergents. However, formulating mono-long chain amine oxide surfactants containing high levels, ie, greater than about 30% by weight (based on the weight of the amine)...
