Problems solved by technology

The problem with conventional LCPs is that they cannot be used as barrier layers in oriented packaging materials because they do not stretch well at the temperatures typically used in conventional thermoplastic orientation processes
The patent does not describe any composition that can be stretched at temperatures commonly used in the packaging industry

Embodiment 1-31

[0086] To a three-necked cylindrical flask equipped with a stainless steel "c" stirrer, inlet tube, thermocouple, distillation trap, and Vigreux fractionating column connected to the condenser and receiver was added the following materials:

[0087] 372.6 g parabens,

[0088] 451.2 g of 6-hydroxy-2-naphthoic acid,

[0089] 124.2 g m-hydroxybenzoic acid,

[0090] 623.7 grams of acetic anhydride (1 mole percent excess) and

[0091] 0.06 grams of potassium acetate (30 ppm).

[0092] The flask was evacuated, flushed with dry nitrogen to remove oxygen, and then buried in an electrically heated fluidized sand bath. Heat the contents of the flask to about 150° C. while stirring at 75 rpm to acetylate the hydroxyl groups in the contents. The temperature was then raised from 150°C to 220°C over 70 minutes to distill the by-product acetic acid. Polymerization was started at 220°C and the bath temperature was raised to 320°C over 110 minutes. The acetic acid generated at this time ...

Abstract

The present invention relates to a stretchable polymer consisting essentially of recurring units derived from para-oxybenzoyl, 6-oxy-2-naphthoyl and meta-oxybenzoyl. The invention also relates to a process for stretching a multilayer laminate comprising the steps of providing a multilayer laminate comprising a layer of a thermoplastic and a layer of the stretchable polymer, and stretching the laminate greater than about 100% elongation at a temperature less than about 200 DEG C.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to stretchable liquid crystal polymer (LCP) compositions suitable for the manufacture of articles of various shapes, including films, fibers, multilayer laminates, and blow molded articles. The invention also relates to a method of stretching a multilayer laminate in which one layer is made from the stretchable LCP composition. Background technique [0002] Anisotropic melt polymers, also known as liquid crystal polymers or "LCPs", are well known in the art. The molecular chains in anisotropic melt polymers are arranged in parallel in the melt phase, so they are called "thermotropic" liquid crystal polymers. Many of these liquid crystal polymer materials are in fact all aromatics. [0003] It is well known that commercially available LCPs have many superior physical properties, such as higher toughness and modulus, compared with conventional polymers. LCP is also an excellent barrier material to prevent the transmission...
