Embodiment Construction

[0027] Before describing in detail the particular antenna arrangement of the present invention, it should be observed that the present invention consists essentially in illustrating a novel and non-obvious combination of elements. Thus, elements of the invention have been represented by conventional elements in the drawings, and only those details relevant to the invention are shown here, lest the disclosure of the invention is not overwhelmed by details of construction which are obvious to those skilled in the art. Clear and obvious.

[0028] Figure 4 A conventional handset 80 for receiving and / or transmitting radio frequency energy, such as a cellular telephone, is shown in an operative position next to an ear 82 of a user 84 . exist Figure 5 As further shown in , the handset 80 includes a handset housing 86 enclosing an embedded antenna 88 that is physically and electrically connected to a printed circuit board 90 with a ground plane 91 . Typically, ground plane 91 compr...

Abstract

An antenna structure for use in a communications device for reducing a user's SAR exposure. In addition to the conventional antenna elements, e.g., a radiating element and a ground plane, the antenna structure of the present invention comprises a conductive element for directing radio frequency energy emitted by the radiating element away from the user, thereby reducing the user's SAR exposure. The conductive element can be disposed on an interior or an exterior surface of a case enclosing the communications device.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to antennas, and more particularly to techniques for reducing the exposure SAR (absorption rate) experienced by a user when the user is operating a handheld communication device that employs the antenna to emit radio frequency energy. Background technique [0002] Usually antenna performance depends on the size, shape and material composition of the elements that make up the antenna, as well as the relationship between certain antenna physical parameters (such as the length of a linear antenna and the diameter of a loop antenna) and the wavelength of the signal received or transmitted by the antenna . These relationships determine several antenna operating parameters including: input impedance, gain, directivity coefficient, signal polarization, operating frequency, bandwidth, and radiation pattern. Usually for an operable antenna, the smallest physical antenna size (or the smallest electrically effective size) must be ab...
