Embodiment Construction

[0032] In order to illustrate the method and device according to the present invention, it will now be combined figure 1 to 8 describe some examples of its use.

[0033] figure 1 An example of an antenna array system with a central signal processing unit 109 is illustrated. The antenna array system comprises antenna elements 110, 111, 112, 113 which are either directly connected 102, 104, 106, 108 to a central signal processing unit 109 or via respective receivers 101, 103, 105, 107 are connected. Such an antenna array system can accommodate a very limited number of antenna elements, the maximum being in the range of several tens of antenna elements. If the number of antenna elements increases, the number of necessary connections 102, 104, 106, 108 becomes unmanageable and the necessary computing power of the central signal processing unit 109 becomes very large. The upper limit of acceptable antenna elements would be higher if there were receivers and analog-to-digital co...

Abstract

A method of producing a digital beamformer signal by a number of antenna modules that are alike and by providing a system that implements the method. This is accomplished by introducing signal processing on each antenna module and by creating an asynchronous serial adding chain through the antenna modules to at least in part calculate the digital beamformer signal. Advantageous embodiments according to the invention perform time and space signal processing multiplexing to calculate additional digital beamformer signals.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to communication or sensor antenna arrays, and more particularly to methods and apparatus for dynamically steering one or more antenna beams of an antenna array. Background technique [0002] To obtain the desired flexibility with respect to coverage and / or frequency bandwidth in advanced communication systems or sensor systems such as radars, large antenna arrays with steerable beamforming are required. Regardless of whether analog or digital beamforming is involved, an antenna array with a large number of antenna elements will require a heavy traffic transfer, since each antenna element must deliver its value to a beamformer. For flexibility as well as reasonable cost-effectiveness, virtually all beamforming today is done with digital signal processing. [0003] Antenna array systems with digital beamforming used today are often complex, resulting in high cost and power consumption. The first example is a system where ...
