Embodiment Construction

[0039] Figure 1 shows quite schematically a record carrier for optical storage and retrieval of information according to the invention. In Fig. 1 the substrate 1 is provided as a strip or track in the form of a spiral of possible bit cells. In the case of information storage and retrieval, the helix follows the storage or retrieval mode, respectively.

[0040] Figure 2A A side view of an embodiment of a record carrier for optical storage and retrieval of information comprising a patterned reflective mask layer 3 is shown fully schematically during storage of information in the active layer at preselected bit cells. Figure 2B show as Figure 2A Top view of the record carrier shown in . The record carrier comprises a substrate 1 . The substrate is provided with an active layer 2 for storing information. Active layer 2 uses a bit cell encoding for information storage and retrieval.

Abstract

The invention relates to a record carrier for optical storage and retrieval of information, comprising: a substrate (1), an active layer (2) for storing information, the active layer encoding the storage and retrieval of information using bit cells, and Energy shielding layer for shielding energy during writing of information into the active layer. Preferably, the energy shielding layer comprises a patterned reflective masking layer (3) or a switchable masking layer. Preferably, the reflective mask layer comprises a material with relatively high thermal conductivity. Preferably, the patterned reflective mask layer comprises a metal or a metal alloy, preferably silvered aluminum, gold or copper. Preferably, the switchable masking layer comprises a thermochromic layer and is substantially transparent during recovery of information from the active layer. According to the invention, the record carrier has a relatively high information density.

Description

technical field [0001] The invention relates to a record carrier for optical storage and retrieval of information. Background technique [0002] The information age has brought about an explosion of information available to users. (Personal) computers are widespread and connected via a global communication network of computer networks. The decreasing cost of storing information and the increasing storage capacity of the same small-sized devices have been the key to this revolution. While current storage needs are adequate, storage technology continues to improve to keep pace with rapidly increasing demands. [0003] Record carriers for optical storage of the kind mentioned in the opening paragraph are well known in the art. Although, magnetic and conventional optical information storage technologies that store individual bits as different magnetic or optical changes on the surface of a recording medium are approaching physical limits beyond which individual bits may be to...
