Embodiment Construction

[0019] Some embodiments are disclosed herein of systems and methods for wireless communication devices or systems with switched multi-beam antennas and methods of manufacturing the same. For example, one system and method described herein provides a plurality of monopole antenna elements mounted on a reflective surface. A common reflector cooperates with each active antenna element to create a directional transmission or positive gain direction. A switch allows energizing one or more antenna elements to change the direction of transmission. All antenna elements can be energized so that the antenna assembly radiates omnidirectionally. Directors above or below reflective surfaces can be used to modify antenna characteristics. The system can be used at various frequency ranges using various wireless communication protocols. For example, the system can be used at frequency ranges including 2.4 GHz, 2.8 GHz and 5.8 GHz.

Abstract

An antenna assembly includes a common reflector and multiple monopole type antenna elements positioned on a ground plane and fed with a switch assembly. The switch assembly is capable of feeding individual antennas as well as combining multiple antennas for improved radiation pattern coverage. Multiple antenna elements are placed around the common reflector to cover sectors of space around the antenna assembly to provide transmission and reception of radio frequency (RF) signals for mobile communication devices in a wireless network. The ground plane can be grounded or capacitively coupled to an existing circuit board or metal surface, allowing for reduced ground plane dimensions.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to wireless communication systems in which azimuth antennas are used. Background technique [0002] Antennas are used in wireless communication systems to transmit and receive radio frequency signals. Typically, antennas can be omnidirectional or unidirectional. Additionally, there are antenna systems that provide directional gain in which electronic scanning is performed rather than fixed. However, many of these electronic scanning techniques suffer from excessive wear and tear and high cost. Additionally, many of today's wireless communication systems provide very little space for antenna elements. [0003] A conventional Yagi-Uda array includes a driven element called a driver or antenna element (thus referring to the signal fed to the element by a transceiver or other signal source), a reflector, and one or more directors. Reflectors and directors are not driven, so they are parasitic elements. By choosing the cor...
