Benefits of technology

"The present invention provides a device and method for measuring processes inside the breast, even during the expression of milk. This is achieved by a breast cup with sensors, such as electrodes, optical sensors, acoustic sensors, or thermal sensors, placed on the breast skin. The design of the breast cup allows for measurements to be carried out on the breast in general and during the expression of breast milk. The invention provides information on the process known as milk surge. The technical effect of the invention is to provide a simple and effective solution for measuring breast processes and milk surge."

Problems solved by technology

Breast-feeding a baby is not always straightforward.
The causes of problems may lie with the mother or with the baby.
Expressing breast milk by means of suction pumps or suction devices, also called breast pumps, can also be problematic for some mothers.
During use of the breast pump, however, it is difficult to carry out exact measurements on the mother's breast.

Embodiment Construction

[0016]FIG. 1 shows a breast cup 1 of truncated cone shape which, via a tubular connection piece 2, leads to attachments 3 for a breast pump (not shown) and 4 for a milk-collecting container (not shown).

[0017] The cup 1 with the parts 2-4, made of transparent plastic for example, is itself of conventional design.

[0018] The cup funnel 1′ is provided with a number of electrodes 5 arranged at predetermined locations. On the inside face of the funnel wall 1′, the electrodes have contact surfaces 5″, and, on the outside face of the funnel wall, they have connection contacts 5′.

[0019] When the cup 1 is placed on a breast, the contact surfaces 5″ lie on the breast cup, while a desired voltage can be applied via the connection contacts 5′ (as parts of the electrodes leading through the funnel wall).

[0020] This cup construction also permits measurements via the electrodes during the expression of breast milk. The corresponding appliance for evaluating the measurements can be integrated in...

Abstract

A breast cup or breast shield, in particular for breast pumps, with a funnel-shaped main body preferably made of electrically non-conducting material. The funnel-shaped body is sized and shaped to contact a breast and includes one or more electrodes incorporated in a wall of the funnel-shaped main body at predetermined locations. Each of the one or more electrodes is provided on an inside face of the funnel-shaped main body with a contact surface adapted to contact the breast skin, is led through the wall and, on an outside face of the funnel-shaped main body, includes an electrical connection contact.

Description

TECHNICAL FIELD [0001] The present invention relates to a breast cup, in particular for breast pumps, and to a method for detecting changes in a mother's breast when expressing milk from the mother's breast. STATE OF THE ART [0002] Breast cups for suction pumps and for suction devices for expressing breast milk are widely available in many different designs and are used all over the world. [0003] Breast-feeding a baby is not always straightforward. The causes of problems may lie with the mother or with the baby. Expressing breast milk by means of suction pumps or suction devices, also called breast pumps, can also be problematic for some mothers. [0004] Nowadays, therefore, in the development of suction pumps and of their operating conditions, increased efforts are being made to better understand what is going on inside the mother's breast during expression of breast milk. [0005] During use of the breast pump, however, it is difficult to carry out exact measurements on the mother's ...
