[0025] The invention is directed to a method of treating infection with a pathogen by administering a compound which provides a strong activation stimulus that activates all or nearly all the pathogen from the latent state and concurrently administering one or more anti-pathogen drugs that can inhibit pathogen replication or viability. Under these conditions, infected cells are killed by the replicating pathogen but infection of uninfected cells is largely prevented by the anti-pathogen drug. Thus, by inducing the death of latently infected cells, the method of the invention can substantially reduce the reservoir of latently-infected cells present in the patient.
