[0016]The invention relates to a method and a system of managing pre-charging of a battery of a hybrid vehicle to improve reverse direction hill climb performance. The system / method determines whether pre-charging is needed based on the vehicle state and environmental conditions. This determination can be based on a grade value (or an angle) of a surface or hill upon which the vehicle is positioned, as detected by a grade sensor. The determination can also be based on a state of charge (SOC) value of the battery. The higher the grade value of the hill, and the lower the SOC value, the more likely that pre-charging would be required. The system and method may also base this decision on the expected distance that the vehicle will travel in reverse uphill. The system sets a charging rate and a target charge value based on the detected grade value, SOC data, and / or other sensed data.
