A framework is provided for describing multimedia content and a system in which a plurality of multimedia storage devices employing the content description methods of the present invention can interoperate. In accordance with one form of the present invention, the content description framework is a description scheme (DS) for describing streams or aggregations of multimedia objects, which may comprise audio, images, video, text, time series, and various other modalities. This description scheme can accommodate an essentially limitless number of descriptors in terms of features, semantics or metadata, and facilitate content-based search, index, and retrieval, among other capabilities, for both streamed or aggregated multimedia objects.

Techniques used in database systems for dealing with metadata associated with multimedia objects. The database system includes a generic representation for metadata values. The representation includes a stratum specifier that specifies the stratum to which a metadata value applies, an extent specifier that specifies a portion of the stratum to which the metadata value applies, and a metadata item specifier that specifies the metadata value. The generic representation is implemented in an object-oriented relational database system. The generic representation of the metadata for a given multimedia object is contained in the object in the database that represents the multimedia object. A method and system for collecting metadata for multimedia objects is described. According to an exemplary embodiment, a metadata service is provided for a multimedia object, wherein the metadata service is not associated with a source of the object. At least one metadata vocabulary is identified for the multimedia object using the metadata service. Metadata related to the multimedia object is collected according to the at least one metadata vocabulary. The metadata service allows users to view, modify, or search the metadata for the multimedia object. Users can further select or create metadata vocabularies to be used in the viewing, modifying, or searching of the metadata. In this manner, a common mechanism for providing a metadata service related to the multimedia object and for advertising the metadata service is provided.
