A network-enabled audio device that provides a display device that allows the user to select playlists of music much like a jukebox is disclosed. The user can compose playlists from disk files, CD's, Internet streaming audio broadcasts, online music sites, and other audio sources. The user can also select a desired Web broadcast from a list of available Web broadcasts. In addition, the user can play standard audio CD's and MP3 encoded CD's and have access to local AM/FM stations. Further, the software, the user controls, and the display in the network-enabled audio device are operably configured and connected such that the user can listen to playlists that include CD's and other audio sources just as the user would choose a playlist in a jukebox. The user accesses a server site via a PC and the Internet. From the server site, the user obtains a list of the devices in his or her Internet Personal Audio Network (IPAN) and what songs are on those devices. The IPAN includes an IPAN server, an IPAN client, and IPAN software stored on the network-enabled audio device. Thus, the network-enabled audio device provides people who are or are not comfortable with computers a way of taking music from various sources and putting it into one place for listening pleasure. In one embodiment, the Personal Computer (PC) is used to compose the playlists, but the user is able to listen to playlists and other audio sources without using the PC.

A digital video decoding system receives packetized video data representing programs conveyed on a plurality of video channels. The system includes a plurality of buffers for storing encoded video data representing images of video programs conveyed on a corresponding plurality of video channels. An individual buffer, corresponding to an individual video channel, stores sufficient encoded video data to prevent an underflow condition following switching to decode a program conveyed on the individual video channel. A processor initiates switching to decode a program conveyed on a selected one of the plurality of video channels in response to a user channel selection input. A decoder decodes encoded video data received from one of the plurality of buffers corresponding to the program conveyed on the selected video channel as determined by switching initiated by the processor. The decoder also predicts a next channel to be selected by a user based on, (a) predetermined user channel and program preference criteria, (b) predetermined user channel navigation patterns, or (c) user data entry device sensory data.

A digital broadcast channel reception system and a portable terminal allow watching a digital broadcast on the terminal. In the examples, a receiver unit for receiving digital broadcasts transmits video data to a display unit, using its TX data manipulator, modulator, TX circuit, and antenna. The TX data manipulator manipulates the output from an OFDM demodulator into data to transmit from the TX circuit and appends error correction codes to the data. The modulator modulates the output from the TX data manipulator. A display unit for digital broadcast display receives video data transmitted from the receiver unit, using its antenna, TX/RX section, and modulator/demodulator. After error correction codes in the received signals are decoded by a TX/RX data manipulator, video data is extracted. After the video data is decoded by a MPEG4 decoder, a picture is output on the display.

An interactive radio system is disclosed. The overall architecture of the interactive radio system includes a broadcast system for broadcasting digital information across a radio signal to web radio receiver units. An interactive broadcast reception system includes a general purpose computer having a processor, display, and storage and internet connection, a broadcast receiver to communicate with the general purpose computer and to decode digital subcarrier data formatted as a broadcast markup language document, and application software that runs on the processor of the computer and communicates with the broadcast receiver to control the operation of the broadcast receiver and to respond to broadcast markup language commands in said broadcast markup language document by connecting to an internet address referenced in said digital subcarrier data.

A system for sending multimedia data between a first High Definition Multimedia Interface (HDMI) component and a second HDMI component that is engaged with a displayer of multimedia data includes a first Digital Visual Interface (DVI) component receiving HDCP-encrypted multimedia data from the first HDMI component over a wire. A wireless transmitter sends data from the first DVI component to a wireless receiver, preferably at 60 GHz, and the receiver in turn sends the data to a second DVI component. Neither DVI component encrypts or decrypts data. The second DVI component sends the multimedia data to a second HDMI component for decryption and display on, e.g., an LCD or plasma display.

A digital broadcasting receiving system and method, where the digital broadcasting receiving system includes: a demodulator receiving and demodulating a dual transmission stream including a turbo stream and a normal stream; an equalizer equalizing the demodulated dual transmission stream; a first processor restoring normal stream data from the equalized dual transmission stream; and a second processor restoring turbo stream data from the equalized dual transmission stream and eraser decoding the turbo stream data. Thus, the reception sensitivity of a transmission stream including a turbo stream can be improved.

Transmitting data in a digital video broadcasting for handheld (DVB-H) receiver comprises a transport stream (TS) demultiplexer adapted to extract internet protocol (IP) datagrams from TS data packets; a packet identifier (PID) filter adapted to extract the TS data packets based on the PIDs of the TS data packets; a Multi Protocol Encapsulation-Forward Error Correction (MPE-FEC) random access memory (RAM) unit operatively connected to the TS demultiplexer; a Reed-Solomon decoder operatively connected to the MPE-FEC RAM unit; an IP to TS encapsulator operatively connected to the MPE-FEC RAM unit; a TS multiplexer operatively connected to each of the PID filter and the IP to TS encapsulator, wherein the TS multiplexer is adapted to combine both DVB-Terrestrial (DVB-T) and DVB-H TS data packets into a single combined TS data packet; and a host interface operatively connected to the TS multiplexer.

A DTV receiver includes a tuner, an information detector, a demodulator, and a channel equalizer. The tuner receives a broadcast signal including valid data in which a known data sequence is periodically repeated. The information detector detects location information of the known data sequence and a coarse frequency offset value of the broadcast signal. The demodulator demodulates the broadcast signal by estimating a fine frequency offset value using the detected location information and by compensating a frequency offset of the broadcast signal using the course and fine frequency offset values. Finally, the channel equalizer compensates channel distortion of the demodulated signal using the detected location information.

A method for processing a composite digital audio broadcast signal to mitigate intermittent interruptions in the reception of the digital audio broadcast signal, the method comprising the steps of separating an analog audio portion of the digital audio broadcast signal from a digital audio portion of the digital audio broadcast signal, detecting errors in the digital audio portion of the digital audio broadcast signal, adjusting the digital audio portion of the digital audio broadcast signal in response to errors in the digital audio portion of the digital audio broadcast signal to produce an adjusted digital audio portion, and blending the analog audio portion with the adjusted digital audio portion to produce an audio output. A receiver that performs the method is also included.

The present invention discloses a receiving system and a method of processing data to receiving and processing mobile service data. The receiving system may include a signal receiving unit, a demodulating unit, a data processor, and a middleware engine. The signal receiving unit receives a broadcasting signal, which includes IP packets, payload of the IP packets including a DSM-CC module data part and a DSM-CC header, the DSM-CC module data part including a plurality of DSM-CC objects, and the DSM-CC header including identification information for identifying the DSM-CC module. The demodulating unit demodulates the received broadcasting signal including IP packets. The data processor extracts a plurality of DSM-CC objects of a corresponding payload with reference to DSM-CC header information of the IP packets demodulated by the demodulating unit and configuring a DSM-CC module, which includes identification information and the extracted DSM-CC objects. The middleware engine provides a data broadcasting service by driving application corresponding to the DSM-CC module.

A receiver for broadcast signals, e.g. DAB, FM, DVB, and digital or analog short-wave RF broadcast signals according to the present invention includes a polyfunctional circuit (5) that can be switched into three modes and performs the digital frequency demodulation which is needed for the reception of a frequency modulated signal in a first mode A, a digital frequency adjustment of the receiver in case of the reception of a digital or analog modulated broadcast signal like DAB, DVB, DRM or AM in a second mode B and the digital frequency adjustment and the digital gain control of the receiver which is needed in case of the reception of a digitally modulated broadcast signal like DAB, DVB, DRM in a third mode C. Depending on the needed functionality not all of these modes need to be realized.
