If the service supports the priority transmission, a plurality of subchannels to be transmitted for the service are set and a priority of the data to be mapped to the plurality of subchannels is set. The data of the broadcasting service is mapped to the plurality of subchannels according to the priority. Data streams mapped to the plurality of subchannels are encoded in different encoders and the encoded data streams are transmitted.

An interactive television system includes a plurality of client devices connected to a server through a network. The client devices display broadcast contents based on received broadcast data. Icon buttons are displayed superimposed on the displayed broadcast contents. Each icon button represents a different icon. When one of the displayed icon buttons is selected at one of the client devices, then the client device sends a request to the server, asking to execute, at another client device, an icon represented by the selected icon button. The invention is directed to techniques for maintaining a map of node relationships for a network of nodes (e.g., network of computers). In one example, the map of node relationships represents relationships overlaying and typically different from the network of physical connections among the nodes. Each child node periodically checks in with its parent nodes, and the parent nodes can thus determine when a child node has terminated a relationship with the parent or created a new relationship with a new parent. Changes in relationships propagate upward through the network of nodes so that each node maintains a map of the relationships among the descendants of that node. A root node receives the propagated change relationship information and maintains a map of the entire network and valid pathways through the network. The root node can use the map when responding to a request from a client to receive services from a node in the network and redirects the client to attach to a node in the network that has a valid path to the root node. The root node can then broadcast data (e.g. a stream of video data) throughout the network, which is received by all the clients attached to nodes in the network.

A system and method for recording and playback of game data is provided. A recording engine may be configured to record and playback game data, including broadcast data received over a network. The recording engine may be included in a game console or at other network-enabled devices, such as a desktop computer. The recording engine may be configured to record the game data in a buffer memory, an archival memory, and to assist in the display of the game (e.g., interacting with a graphics processing unit). Game data stored in the buffer memory may later be transferred to the archival memory. Playback commands may be operable when a portion of the game broadcast has been recorded. When a playback command is received, the game recording engine may access a portion of the game data from buffer or archival memory and displays a selected portion and may be subject to certain seek functions (e.g., fast forward and rewind). Spectators may be able to independently archive and playback game data using local memory.

A communication apparatus that shares precise return channel uplink timing information includes a common symbol timing reference and one or more control stations that each transmit independent asynchronous DVB data streams which evenly share the common symbol timing. The control stations each include respective delay trackers to determine broadcast transmission delays associated with the particular control station and transmission path. Each broadcast data stream includes the same non real-time frame marker and a transmission delay message particular to the respective control station. A remote receiver receives one of the broadcast streams and timestamps the non real-time frame marker with a local time of receipt. A timing recovery circuit determines an upcoming return channel frame start time by adjusting the local time of receipt by the particular broadcast transmission delay and a unique receiver offset time. A local transmitter subsequently uplinks a TDMA message in a predetermined time-slot after the return channel frame start time. The method for transmitting a frame synchronized message includes receiving a non real-time frame reference marker in a receiver, timestamping the received frame reference marker with a reception time, and subsequently receiving a control node timing differential at the receiver. The local reception time of the non real-time frame marker is corrected to determine the proper return channel frame transmit start time by applying the control node timing differential and the local offset time. Users then uplink a message during an assigned period after the return channel frame transmit start time.

A transmitter for broadcasting data in a broadcasting system that improves the decoding quality, if needed, comprises a data input, and an encoder for error correction code encoding the input data words into codewords, a codeword comprising a basic codeword portion and an auxiliary codeword portion, wherein said encoder is adapted for generating said basic codeword portion from an input data word according to a first code and for generating said auxiliary codeword portion from an input data word according to a second code, said basic codeword portion being provided for regular decoding and said auxiliary codeword portion being provided as incremental redundancy if regular decoding of the codeword by use of the basic codeword portion is erroneous. Further, the transmitter comprises a data mapper for mapping the codewords onto frames of a transmitter output data stream, and a transmitter unit for transmitting said transmitter output data stream.
