Embodiment

[0016] Operate under the following reaction conditions figure 1 Reactor of the type shown for 9 days: feed flow 13m 3 / h, 9.5% acetone, temperature 66°C. At the end of this time period, the reactor was heavily fouled and had to be cleaned. The same reactor is then operated according to the present invention. The same reaction conditions were used, except that steam was introduced into the shell of the reactor for 10 minutes per day. After 250 days, the reactor was still operating normally. Subsequently, the same reactor was operated according to another embodiment of the present invention. The same reaction conditions were used, except that steam was introduced into the shell of the reactor for 10 minutes per day and 200 liters of hydrochloric acid was added as a solubilizer before the introduction of the steam. After 100 days, the reactor was still operating normally.

Abstract

Cleaning of reactors for bisphenol production is enhanced by heating the reactor walls, for example by introducing steam into the shell surrounding the reactor. The steam heats the walls between the shell and the interior of the reaction chamber and thus helps to melt / dissolve the bisphenol:phenol adduct formed on the reaction chamber walls. The time for steam introduction is at least 5 minutes, preferably 5-60 minutes. In a variation of the method, during the introduction of steam, a solubilizing composition is introduced into the reaction chamber to increase the solubility of the bisphenol. Suitable solubilizing compositions include hydrochloric acid and / or water, or a mixture of acetone and phenol.

Description

[0001] The present invention relates to a method for cleaning a reactor for the acid-catalyzed production of bisphenol. background of invention [0002] Bisphenols, especially bisphenol A (2,2-bis(p-hydroxyphenyl)propane), have become industrially important reactants for many processes including the preparation of polycarbonates. On an industrial scale, bisphenols are prepared by a two-step reaction: an acid-catalyzed or HCl step and an ion-exchange step in which an acidic ion-exchange resin, such as sulfonic acid-substituted polystyrene, is employed. In the HCl step, bisphenols are prepared by condensing 2 moles of phenol with 1 mole of a ketone or aldehyde, such as acetone, in the presence of HCl. Methods for the preparation and purification of bisphenols are known and are disclosed inter alia in US Patent Nos. 4,107,218; 4,294,994; 5,210,329; 5,243,093:5,245,088; 5,288,926; [0003] During the preparation of bisphenols by the methods described above, the solubility of the ...
