Abstract

The present invention provides a display, such as an LCD, for a computer system that is configured to consume less power than conventional designs. The display includes a screen and at least one backlight configured to illuminate the screen. The input to the at least one backlight is adjustable to produce a desired brightness level. The input may be computed from the generated source image and specified constraints. The input to the display may be calculated from the input of the at least one backlight and the source image. The input to the display modifies the brightness level provided by the at least one backlight to produce a viewable image.
