Problems solved by technology

[0005] The aforementioned publications do not teach a four-tube flameless combustion heating apparatus for heating process fluids, nor do they recognize the possible difficulties associated with starting a three- or four-tube flameless combustion apparatus from a cold start condition, especially When the tubes of a heating plant are grouped together on a heat exchanger system by using multiple tube sheets
A consideration when starting a flameless combustion device from a cold start is the potential for unstable combustion of the introduced fuel due to various input streams introduced into the cold device
Another consideration is the difficulty of unstable state operation of flameless combustion equipment that may arise during cold start

Embodiment Construction

[0013] The present invention provides a method or process for initiating the use of a flameless combustion apparatus or direct heating system from a cold start condition. The direct heating system which is the subject of the start-up method described here is any type of heating system used for the combustion of fuel and for the direct transfer of the released thermal energy into the treatment fluid.

[0014] Direct heating systems of the present invention include those commonly referred to as flameless combustion devices or flameless combustion systems or flameless distributed combustion (FDC) devices or similar designations, and include those integrated heating systems intended to Combustion fuel for situations where the added fuel is introduced into the preheated oxidant stream below the autoignition temperature of the resulting mixture. The fuel and oxidant streams will mix rapidly so that the combustion reaction is not limited by the low mixing velocity in any way, and the...

Abstract

Included is a method of starting up a direct heating device having a fuel introduction zone, a combustion zone and a process zone that is in heat exchange relationship with said combustion zone. Prior to the introduction of a fuel fluid into said combustion zone, an oxidant fluid, having a high temperature, is passed through the combustion zone for a warm-up time period sufficient to raise the temperature of the direct heating device to a desired temperature. Steam or a process fluid is passed through the process zone followed by the introduction of a fuel fluid into the fuel introduction zone. After the device has been heated up a process fluid is introduced through the process zone. Thereafter, the introduction of steam through the process zone may be stopped.

Description

[0001] This application claims priority to US Provisional Patent Application No. 60 / 660,448, filed March 10, 2005, which is incorporated herein by reference. technical field [0002] The present invention relates to a method of starting a direct heating device or system. Background technique [0003] Many different types and designs of flameless combustion heating devices have been disclosed in the published literature. For example, US Patent No. 5,255,742 discloses a method of heating a subterranean formation using a flameless combustion device. The device includes a fuel gas conduit having a plurality of holes. The fuel gas conduit is centered within the combustion air conduit to form a first annular portion between the fuel gas conduit and the combustion air conduit. The holes are for fluid communication between the fuel gas conduit and the first annular portion. The combustion air conduit is centered within the wellbore casing forming a second annulus between the comb...
