Embodiment Construction

[0019] One or more specific embodiments of the present invention are described and illustrated in the following detailed description that refers to and considers in conjunction with the accompanying drawings. These embodiments, which are provided for non-limiting purposes but merely to illustrate and teach the invention, are shown and described in sufficient detail to enable those skilled in the art to practice the invention. Accordingly, where appropriate to avoid obscuring the invention, this description will omit certain information known to those skilled in the art.

[0020] Referring now to the drawings, and in particular to FIG. 1A , therein is shown an exploded perspective view of a fiber optic connector 10 in accordance with an exemplary embodiment of the present invention. Connector 10 is part of an LC multiconnector assembly 200 (see FIG. 6 ) that combines the high performance of an optical connection with the versatility of a rugged industrial connector to allow eas...

Abstract

A sealed fiber optic connector assembly includes a connector housing (30) uniquely configured to cooperate with a fiber optic cable crimp tail (20) and one or more terminal fiber optic connectors (14). The connector housing has a first opening for securely retaining a terminal fiber optic connector. An internal passage connects the first opening to a second opening at the other end of the housing. The internal passage allows the crimp tail to pass through the housing, and the second opening forms a shoulder such that the crimp tail can rotate and rest on the shoulder after being pushed through the first opening and passage. The cable seal (34) positively holds the crimp tail to the shoulder. This provides a sealed and significantly stronger fiber optic cable connection. The connector housing is part of a removable optical connector that provides an environmental seal when mated to a corresponding adapter.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates generally to fiber optic connectors and adapters, and more particularly to sealed fiber optic connector assemblies for use in harsh operating environments. Background technique [0002] Fiber optic connectors are an essential component of optical communication systems. They are generally used to join lengths of fiber optic cables to form longer lengths, or to connect fibers to end devices such as light sources, detectors, active devices, etc. To function effectively, optical connectors should connect optical fibers with minimal insertion loss and should provide mechanical stability and protection for the junction between optical fibers in the working environment. The stability and protection of the fiber joint is mainly determined by the connector design. [0003] Another desirable feature of the connector is that its design ensures relatively easy field installation. It is highly desirable that the connectors be able t...
