A hollow fiber membrane type artificial lung comprising a hollow fiber bundle composed of multiple porous hollow fiber membranes (8) arranged in one direction; a heat exchange pipe bundle composed of multiple heat exchange pipes (9) arranged in one direction across the hollow fiber membranes and piled one upon another, the heat exchange pipe bundle disposed in parallel to the hollow fiber bundle;and potting materials (10) charged over regions including both end portions of the hollow fiber membranes and heat exchange pipes, which potting materials define a blood flow channel extending acrossthe hollow fiber membranes and heat exchange pipes. Further, there is provided a housing comprising blood ports (3a,3b) facing both ends of the blood flow channel; gas headers (4a,4b) facing both ends of the hollow fiber membranes and providing gas ports (5a,5b); and heat exchange headers (6a,6b) facing both ends of the heat exchange pipe bundle and providing heat exchange liquid ports (7a,7b). Blood is caused to flow through the blood flow channel, and an oxygen-containing gas is passed through the cavity of the hollow fiber membranes to thereby carry out gas exchange. A heat exchange liquidis passed through the cavity of the heat exchange pipes to thereby carry out heat exchange.
