Embodiment Construction

[0009] FIG. 1 shows a typical turbinate ablation procedure for a patient 1 with enlarged turbinates 2 . To accomplish thermal ablation of the turbinates, the physician inserts the distal end of the ablation probe 3 through the nostril 4 and into the sinus cavity to reach the turbinates. The physician pushes the heating segment 5 mounted on the distal end 6 into the turbinate and advances the distal end into the submucosa, then along the turbinate and within the desired distal mucosal tissue. When satisfied with the position of the probe tip, the physician will begin heating of the heating segment at the distal end of the probe, repeated as necessary to ablate the turbinates to the extent indicated by the physician's observations. A device designed to provide heating for a predetermined period of time, by means such as a timing circuit, computer control system, or implanted microprocessor, where the period of time is predetermined by the parameters of the timing circuit or the ...

Abstract

Devices and methods for thermal ablation of hypertrophied tissue, such as turbinates, with a resistive heating element adapted for insertion into the tissue. The device uses DC current to heat the resistive heating element, and is operated at relatively low voltage levels and low current levels. The device is easy to operate, and may be applied for predetermined time periods without feedback control, using a timing circuit or computerized control system. The resistive heating element is covered with a thin, non-stick, coating that is thermally conductive, such as Xylan TM , Teflon TM or other fluoropolymer or suitable material.

Description

technical field [0001] The following invention relates to the field of tissue ablation and turbinate reduction. Background technique [0002] Chronic nasal obstruction is often the result of enlarged turbinates, the coiled bony protrusions that cover the nasal cavity with mucous membrane. These mucous membranes lie just inside the nose, and they are subject to chronic swelling and hypertrophy that lead to chronic congestion, sinus infections, sleep disturbances, and other chronic conditions. More recently, radiofrequency ablation of the turbinates, known as somnplasty, has been adopted as a treatment for turbinates enlargement. In this technique, a long, thin radiofrequency probe is inserted into the submucosa of the turbinates, and radiofrequency energy is passed through the submucosa to heat and destroy (ablate) a small portion of this tissue. As the damaged tissue heals and is reabsorbed by the body, the submucosa tissue shrinks and relieves the blockage. The healing p...
