The invention discloses an on-line meter reading system and a method thereof; wherein, the system comprises a remote meter reading host computer, a plurality of gauges, a plurality of meter reading branch computers; the gauges use the same or different codes; the meter reading branch computers are used to forward data information transmitted between the remote meter reading host computer the gauges; each meter reading branch computer is connected with at least one gauge; the remote meter reading host computer is used to read data information of the gauges. The remote meter reading host computer comprises a memory which is used to store correspondence addresses of the meter reading branch computers, identification numbers of the gauges under the meter reading branch computers, corresponding meter code identifications, meter correspondence addresses of the gauges. The remote meter reading host computer is internally provided with communication and data processing modules corresponding to the codes of the gauges, which are used to generate meter reading request frame regarding the meter codes used by the gauges, simultaneously receive return frames returned by the gauges and analyze the data information of the gauges based on the return frames. The system and method of the invention can lower complexity and working load in software upgrading and maintenance of the on-spot meter reading device.
