Problems solved by technology

However, the use of impedance techniques to monitor growth or other characteristics of biological cells is complicated by the fact that each measurement system has its own characteristic impedance, which must be separated from the cell's impedance response

Embodiment Construction

[0035] figure 1 Shown is a device 5 for characterizing a biological cell 10, such as a plant or animal cell, a bacterium, a plant or animal tissue, a multicellular organism, an archaea, or the like. The device 5 includes a controller 15 for providing electrical signals to, and obtaining electrical responses from, a measurement system 20 comprising two planar gold electrodes 25 within a container 30 for containing a growth medium 35 . The growth medium 35 is conductive such that when the container 30 is filled, an electrical circuit including the electrodes 25, the controller 15 and the growth medium 35 is completed.

[0036] The controller 15 is configured to perform AC impedance spectrum analysis by monitoring the impedance response of the system 20 to small AC disturbance currents over a range of frequencies. This includes applying an electrical stimulus between the electrodes 25, and measuring the magnitude and phase of the current and voltage between at least two points i...

Abstract

A method for characterising cells or cell structures in a sample comprising: obtaining at least one normalized impedance response of the sample over at least one frequency range; and characterising at least one cell using at least one characteristic of the normalized impedance response.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to a system and method for characterizing cells and structures made of cells. Background technique [0002] Various techniques for monitoring the growth or other characteristics of biological cells have been reported. One such technique involves the use of impedance methods as reported in "Single Cell Mobility and Adhesion Monitoring Using Extracellular Electrodes" by Lind R et al., Biosensors and Bioelectronics, 1991, 6(4), pp. 359-367. Other reported techniques include determining changes in impedance and linking these changes to cell or bacterial growth or movement. [0003] Most of these techniques involve measuring the ac impedance of cells or bacteria in a suitable growth medium. Some success has been achieved using these methods to link the total change in impedance Z at some fixed electrical excitation frequency (typically in the kilohertz range) to cell and bacterial growth. However, the use of impedance techni...
