[0015] In magnetic storage media, the magnetic recording layer includes a thin film of magnetic alloy that forms random nanoscale grains that behave as individual magnetic elements. Each written bit is made up of many such random grains. In bit-patterned media (BPM), the magnetic layer is pre-patterned with an ordered array of patterned bits, each patterned bit capable of storing an independent bit of data. BPMs can be pre-patterned by various processes such as, but not limited to, photolithography, ion milling, and the like. Other types of storage media exist, including digital tapes and floppy disks. The presently disclosed technology can be applied to various types of magnetic media storage.
