Embodiment Construction

[0028] The description provided below serves to explain and exemplify the increase in efficiency brought about by the rotational motion of the PV cell. It describes exemplary configurations and methods of operation. The appended claims, which protect exclusive rights, define the invention and are not intended to be limited to the specific embodiment shown and described.

[0029] figure 1 , figure 2 and Figure 4 Illustrated in is a solar energy conversion device 10 that generally includes a shaft 12 and a plurality of outwardly extending blades 14 . In these figures, each vane 14 extends radially from the shaft 12, but alternative arrangements are also possible, eg tangential to the radius, parallel to the radius, etc. As shown in these figures, the shaft 12 is generally arranged vertically with respect to the ground or other support surface.

[0030] The shaft 12 generally need not be of solid cross-section, but may instead be at least partially hollow. Shaft 12 may be...

Abstract

Photovoltaic cells in rotational motion exhibit higher efficacy relative to the same cells provided in planar arrays arranged stationary parallel to the ground or designed to conform to the arc of the sun. A solar energy conversion device (10) comprising a shaft (12) and a plurality of outwardly extending blades (14), each blade carrying a plurality of photovoltaic cells (21), the solar energy conversion device generating a higher amount of current than that arranged in a plane of photovoltaic cells of the same area. The device can be used as part of an assembly (100) with a motor or generator (101).

Description

Background technique [0001] Photovoltaic (PV) cells emit electrons upon exposure to radiant energy. The components of PV cells are used to make solar modules, and then the solar modules can be connected in series to form an array. [0002] A typical solar generator employs an array of PV cells connected in an electrical arrangement to generate direct current (DC) electricity; see, for example, US Patent Nos. 4,614,879 and 4,321,416. Unlike alternating current (AC), standard DC power output cannot be converted, a feature that limits its use to relatively close locations where it is generated. Accordingly, the DC output of many solar generators is used to drive nearby devices designed to operate on DC (eg, portable computers) or charge storage devices such as batteries. [0003] For the DC output of solar power that needs to be transmitted over long distances or connected to the power grid, the DC must first be converted to AC by a device such as an inverter; see, for example,...
