The protective gas comprises industrial-purity SO2 gas and industrial-purity CO2 gas according to different volume content ratios, and is led to a smelting furnace which is not sealed in the atmospheric environment to protect the smelting of the magnesium and the magnesium alloy,so that the mixture of the SO2 gas and the CO2 gas form a dense inflaming retarding protective film on the surface of magnesium melt under different temperatures. The invention has the advantages that the magnesium alloy in the smelting furnace can be smelted in the atmospheric environment, the inflaming retarding effect is favorable, the environmental pollution is low, and the practical application value is high.
