Embodiment Construction

[0080] Described herein are embodiments of prosthetic valves and components thereof intended primarily to be implanted in the mitral valve region of the human heart, and devices and methods for implanting the same. The prosthetic valve can be used to help restore and / or replace the functionality of a defective natural valve.

[0081] human heart

[0082] The relevant parts of the human heart are in figure 1 and 2 shown in . A healthy heart has a generally conical shape that tapers to a lower apex (lower apex) 38 . The heart is four chambered and includes a left atrium 4 , a right atrium 26 , a left ventricle 6 and a right ventricle 28 . The left and right sides of the heart are separated by a wall commonly called the septum 30 . The natural mitral valve 2 of the human heart connects the left atrium 4 to the left ventricle 6 . Compared to other natural heart valves such as the aortic valve 14, the mitral valve 2 has a very different anatomy.

Abstract

Embodiments of prosthetic valves for implantation within a native mitral valve are provided. A preferred embodiment of a prosthetic valve includes a radially compressible main body and a one-way valve portion. The prosthetic valve further comprises at least one ventricular anchor coupled to the main body and disposed outside of the main body. A space is provided between an outer surface of the main body and the ventricular anchor for receiving a native mitral valve leaflet. The prosthetic valve preferably includes an atrial sealing member adapted for placement above the annulus of the mitral valve. Methods and devices for delivering and implanting the prosthetic valve are also described.

Description

technical field [0001] The present disclosure relates generally to prosthetic devices for repairing and / or replacing natural heart valves, and in particular to prosthetic valves for replacing defective mitral valves, and for delivery and implantation of such prosthetic valves in the human heart methods and equipment. Background technique [0002] Prosthetic valves have been used for many years to treat valvular heart disease. The natural heart valves (ie, the aortic, pulmonary, tricuspid and mitral valves) play a key role in ensuring an adequate blood supply to flow forward through the cardiovascular system. Congenital malformations, inflammatory processes, infectious conditions or diseases can make these heart valves less effective. Such damage to the valve can lead to serious cardiovascular harm or death. For many years, the definitive treatment for this condition has been to surgically repair or replace the valve during open-heart surgery. However, such surgery is hig...
