According to the projector and the control method thereof disclosed by the invention, a light modulation device receives primary light produced by a light source system and carries out image modulation on the primary light, each modulation period of each modulation unit of the light modulation device comprises a plurality of modulation time intervals corresponding to different gray scales, a ratio of the time length of the modulation time interval with the corresponding gray scale which is no larger than a preset gray scale to the time length of the modulation time interval with the corresponding gray scale which is larger than the preset gray scale is larger than a brightness ratio among the corresponding gray scales, and a control device is used for controlling the brightness or lighting time of the primary light produced by the light source system in each modulation time interval, so that a ratio of products of the brightness and the lighting time of the primary light in every two modulation time intervals is equal to the brightness ratio between the corresponding gray scales in every two modulation time intervals. Through the mode, the time length of a relatively smaller modulation time interval with the gray scale can be prolonged so as to be compatible with the switching time of the modulation units.
