Embodiment Construction

[0047] A surge vapor compression heat pump system includes a refrigerant phase separator for generating at least one surge of gas phase refrigerant into an inlet of an evaporator. The evaporator can be located inside the conditioned space or outside. The surge is generated by operating the phase separator at a refrigerant mass flow rate, which may depend on the design and size of the phase separator and the heat transfer capacity of the refrigerant. The one or more surges may be generated during an on-cycle of the compressor.

[0048] The surge of gas phase refrigerant may have a higher temperature than liquid phase refrigerant. Relative to the initial temperature of the expanded refrigerant supplied to the phase separator, the liquid resulting from the phase separator will be cooler and the vapor resulting from the phase separator will be warmer than the initial temperature of the expanded refrigerant. Thus, the temperature of the vapor is raised by heat derived from the li...

Abstract

The present invention discloses surge heat pump systems, devices and methods having a refrigerant phase separator for generating at least one surge of gas phase refrigerant to the inlet of the evaporator during the on-cycle of the compressor. Chung. This surge of gas phase refrigerant has a higher temperature than liquid phase refrigerant and thus raises the temperature of the evaporator inlet, thereby reducing frost buildup relative to conventional refrigeration systems without surge input of gas phase refrigerant to the evaporator. The temperature of the refrigerant in the vapor phase is raised relative to the liquid phase by heat from the liquid due to phase separation, rather than by introducing heat from another source. The inrush heat pump system can be operated in the highest heat transfer efficiency mode and / or in one or more higher temperature modes.

Description

[0001] References to related applications [0002] This application claims priority to US Provisional Application No. 61 / 348,847, filed May 27, 2010, entitled "Surged Heat Pump Systems," which is hereby incorporated by reference in its entirety. Background technique [0003] Vapor compression systems circulate a refrigerant in a closed circuit to transfer heat from one external medium to another. Vapor compression systems are used in air conditioning, heat pumps and refrigeration systems. figure 1 A conventional vapor compression heat transfer system 100 is shown that operates by compression and expansion of a refrigerant fluid. The system 100 transfers heat from the first external medium 150 to the second external medium 160 in one direction through a closed circuit. A fluid comprises a liquid phase and / or a gas phase. Thus, if the first external medium 150 is room air contained within a structure, and the second external medium 160 is air outside the structure, the system...
