Problems solved by technology

For example, 747 cargo planes typically transport cargo on the main deck, which is used to carry passengers in conventional aircraft, but the difficulty of raising cargo to the upper deck, located forward of the fuselage, means that this part of the plane is largely unused of

Embodiment Construction

[0059] figure 1 A typical wide body aircraft 10 is shown with an elevator assembly 12 installed to allow the aircraft to carry cargo in containers 14 on the cargo and main (passenger) decks 16 , 18 . As described in detail below, the lift assembly is preferably mounted on the tail of the aircraft, as shown. Figure 2-5 The basic operation of the system is shown in turn.

[0060] As used in the description and claims, the term "lower deck" refers to the first deck on which goods are placed, and the term "upper deck" refers to the second deck above the first deck. Lift equipment transports cargo to and / or from said upper deck. One could be a dedicated cargo deck and the other primarily a passenger deck, as in Figure 1-5 shown, or they could both be the main cargo or passenger decks, especially in double-deck "jumbo" aircraft (such as the Boeing 747 or Airbus A380).

[0061] therefore, figure 2 The general passenger structure of the aircraft is shown, with the interior of ...

Abstract

An apparatus (12) for transferring cargo (14) between an upper (18), passenger deck and a lower (16), cargo deck of an aircraft (10). A lift platform raises (30) palletized cargo from the lower deck through an opening (38) formed in the upper deck. The drive mechanism (62) is housed entirely within the lift platform itself. The platform is stabilized by flanking, scissors - action leg assemblies (80), that nest alongside the platform when stowed. The platform is stowed in the raised position, within the opening formed in the upper deck. Locking assemblies (50) attach the lift platform to the sides of the opening so that the platform becomes a load-bearing structural component of the upper deck when stowed. A recess (32) is formed in the lower deck for receiving the lift platform when lowered. A translating floor assembly (294) having folding floor sections (296 a-e) lowers to clear the recess, and then raises to define a floor surface over the opening when the lift platform is not in use.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates generally to cargo lifts for use in aircraft, and more particularly to interior cargo lifts for raising or lowering cargo between decks of aircraft to facilitate and quickly convert passenger rest areas and other unusable areas to Cargo compartment space and support. Background technique [0002] In the past, the commercial aircraft industry had a distinct distinction between passenger and cargo aircraft, with some aircraft being dedicated to passenger transport while others were used only for cargo transport. But the inelastic nature of aircraft dedicating to one service or the other has become an obvious problem for increasing the competitiveness of the industry. A limited number of aircraft are constructed as "combis", which are capable of carrying passengers and commercial cargo, but few have a flexible design that allows seating and cargo to be changed accordingly. In addition, in the few cases where the structure c...
