Problems solved by technology

More seriously, released air bubbles may enter the patient's vascular system and block blood flow, causing tissue damage and even stroke
In addition, residual drug may interact with the drug being infused, causing precipitation in the extravascular system and preventing it from functioning properly
Also, residual drug may enter the patient's vasculature and cause unintended and / or undesired effects

Embodiment Construction

[0040]The preferred embodiments of the present invention are best understood by reference to the drawings, wherein like reference numerals indicate identical or functionally similar elements. It will be readily appreciated that the components of the present invention may be arranged and designed in many different configurations, as generally described herein and shown in the drawings. Accordingly, the following more detailed description (as shown in the accompanying drawings) shall not limit the scope of the invention claimed, but is only representative of the presently preferred embodiments of the invention.

[0041] The term "proximal" is used to denote the portion of the device that is, during normal use, closest to the user and furthest from the patient. The term "distal" is used to denote the part of the device that is furthest from the user using the device and closest to the patient during normal use. The term "actuation" of a valve mechanism or diaphragm is used to de...

Abstract

A system for controlling fluid flow in a catheter assembly ( 101 ) is disclosed herein. An intravenous catheter assembly has a catheter adapter ( 14 ) and a needle hub, and the catheter adapter has an inner lumen. A septum ( 50 ) is disposed within a portion of the inner lumen, and a slit ( 56 ) is formed through the septum. A Parylene coating is disposed within the slit of the septum, the Parylene coating has a thickness of between approximately 0.00005 to 0.0005 millimeters. An introducer needle has a first end coupled to the needle hub and the second end extending through the inner lumen of the catheter adapter. A middle portion of the introducer needle is positioned within a portion of the septum.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to infusion devices, and in particular to peripheral intravenous (IV) catheters. In particular, the present invention relates to a flushable peripheral IV catheter assembly having features capable of selectively driving fluid flow through the catheter assembly. Background technique [0002] Catheters are commonly used for a variety of infusion treatments. For example, catheters are used to infuse fluids (eg, saline solution, various drugs, and total parenteral nutrition) into a patient, to withdraw blood from a patient, and to monitor various parameters of a patient's vascular system. [0003] A catheter or needle is usually attached to a catheter adapter so that IV tubing can be fitted to the catheter. Thus, after the catheter or needle is placed within the patient's vasculature, the catheter adapter is connected to the fluid source through a portion of the IV tubing. To demonstrate proper placement of the needle and / o...
