Problems solved by technology

A known indication of an SCR system failing to convert sufficient NOx is the failure to deliver the required amount of reductant for NOx conversion due to a blockage within the reductant delivery system
Known systems and associated diagnostics fail to adequately diagnose poor performance of the reductant delivery system due to clogging or other failures and therefore fail to meet OBD requirements considering failure of the reductant delivery system

Embodiment Construction

[0038] figure 1 One embodiment of an engine system 10 is shown. The major components of the engine system 10 include an internal combustion engine 20 and an exhaust aftertreatment system, which may be in the form of a selective catalytic reduction (SCR) system 18 including a catalytic chamber 22 in communication with the internal combustion engine 20 And exhaust gas is received through exhaust manifold 24 . The SCR catalyst chamber 22 includes an SCR catalyst configured to interact with the exhaust gas and reduce NOx in the presence of ammonia. The internal combustion engine 20 may be a compression ignition engine, such as a diesel fueled engine, or a spark ignited internal combustion engine, such as a gasoline fueled engine operated on a tilt. Fuel and air are combusted within a compression chamber of the internal combustion engine 20 to provide exhaust gas that is discharged into an exhaust manifold 24 . At least a portion of the exhaust flow flows from exhaust manifold 2...

Abstract

The present invention provides a device, method and system for diagnosing the performance of reductant delivery. An exhaust gas aftertreatment system for an internal combustion engine may have a reductant delivery system with a controller that performs a determination of the reductant delivery system Whether there is a staged diagnosis of blockage. The diagnostic process may include sampling first and second pressures at first and second operating conditions, respectively, and then comparing a first differential pressure between the first and second pressures to one or more threshold differential pressures to determine if system components such as dosing lines and injectors are at least partially clogged. If this test is inconclusive, it can be repeated at the third and fourth operating conditions to provide a second differential pressure. The offset between the first and second differential pressures can also be used to help diagnose where in the system a blockage is occurring.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to internal combustion engines, and more particularly to diagnosing the operation of a reductant delivery system for exhaust aftertreatment. Background technique [0002] In recent years, emission regulations for internal combustion engines have become more stringent. Concern for the environment has led to stricter emission regulations for internal combustion engines in most parts of the world. Government agencies, such as the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in the United States, carefully monitor engine emissions and set appropriate emission standards with which all engines must comply. As a result, exhaust aftertreatment systems are increasingly being used on engines to reduce emissions. [0003] In general, emission regulations vary depending on the type of engine. Emissions tests for compression ignition (e.g., diesel) engines typically measure released carbon monoxide (CO), unburned hydrocarbons (UHC), engine...
