Embodiment Construction

[0030] figure 1 A cross-section of a substrate 30 is shown, which may be a first electrode at least partially coated with a plurality of zinc oxide microstructures 31 . The microstructures 31 protrude upward from the substrate 30 or the electrodes. Although the term "microstructure" is used herein to describe the nature of the size of the zinc oxide protrusions, those skilled in the art will appreciate that the actual dimensions of the zinc oxide protrusions 31 may approach or enter the nanoscale or, alternatively, larger than the microscale.

[0031]Substrate 30 may be conductive or non-conductive. The non-conductive substrate 30 may be ceramic or any of a variety of non-conductive substrates apparent to those skilled in the art. The conductive substrate can also vary greatly, and can eliminate the need to form the first electrode 32 (see figure 2 ) or a separate manufacturing step in which the first electrode 32 is attached or coupled to the substrate 30 or deposited ont...

Abstract

A measurement system is disclosed for determining a sulfur concentration in a liquid (34), such as a liquid (34) fuel. The measurement system includes a first electrode (32) that is at least partially coated with zinc oxide and, more specifically, zinc oxide microstructures (31). The zinc oxide microstructures (310 have a crystal lattice structure that is oriented in the (002) plane. The first electrode (32) may be connected to an electrometer (36) which, in turn, may be connected to a second electrode (132). The second electrode (132) may be disposed on a common substrate (30) with the first electrode (32) or may be in the form of a plate disposed substantially parallel to the first electrode (32).

Description

technical field [0001] The present disclosure generally relates to sensors and measurement systems for detecting and measuring sulfur concentrations in liquids. More specifically, the present disclosure relates to sulfur measurement systems with improved zinc oxide sulfur sensors for measuring sulfur concentrations in liquids and methods of making the improved sulfur measurement systems available to operators in the art. Background technique [0002] Being able to accurately and reliably measure the concentration of sulfur in a liquid is important because various chemical reactions can occur that can release harmful sulfur compounds into the atmosphere or onto physical structures surrounding the sulfur-containing liquid. For example, the combustion of diesel fuel typically produces sulfur oxides (SO 2 , SO 3 ) and sulfuric acid (H 2 SO 4 ), which is a component of acid rain and is subject to environmental regulations. Further, these sulfur compounds have been linked to ...
