Embodiment 1

[0053] The following examples demonstrate some of the advantages and benefits of the present disclosure.

[0054] To produce reconstituted tobacco, the following process is generally employed.

[0055]A mixture of comminuted tobacco stems and tobacco shreds is first mixed with an aqueous solution. This is followed by an extraction step in a hydraulic press to separate the aqueous fraction from the tobacco fiber fraction. The recovered tobacco fiber fraction is redispersed in the aqueous solution. After additional extraction (by extrusion), wood pulp is added to the tobacco fiber residue. These samples were then refined in a beater. The resulting raw material was used to make tablets. The aqueous fraction is concentrated in an evaporator and then impregnated into tablets. The impregnated sheet is then dried.

[0056] Fourteen different samples were prepared and tested in this example. In samples 1 to 8, reconstituted tobacco was produced on commercial production machines...

Embodiment 2

[0066] Repeat the process of Example 1. In particular, Control Sample No. 1 and Sample No. 2 were generated. Sample No. 2 contained reconstituted tobacco coated with a combination of starch and potassium carbonate. Starch was present in the reconstituted tobacco in an amount of 1.6% by weight, while potassium carbonate was present in the tobacco material in an amount of 4.8% by weight.

[0067] Cigarettes containing 30% by weight reconstituted tobacco or containing 15% by weight reconstituted tobacco were manufactured as described above. When the reconstituted tobacco product was included in the cigarette in an amount of 30% by weight, the following results were obtained.

[0070] When the reconstituted tobacco product was included in the cigarettes in an amount of 15% by weight, the following results were obtained.

[0072]

[0073] As shown above, the presence of the reconstituted tobacco products of the present discl...

Abstract

The present invention discloses a reconstituted tobacco product that can be used to produce smoking articles with lower carbon monoxide levels and carbon monoxide to tar ratios. Reconstituted tobacco materials contain polymer components and flame retardants. The polymeric component forms a coating on the surface of the reconstituted tobacco sheet. The flame retardant can be incorporated into the tobacco material or combined with the polymeric component and included in the coating.

Description

[0001] related application [0002] This application is based on and claims priority to US Provisional Patent Application Serial No. 61 / 644,775, filed May 9, 2012, and incorporated herein by reference. Background technique [0003] Smoking articles such as cigarettes are conventionally manufactured by wrapping a rod of tobacco in a wrapper. At one end, smoking articles typically include a filter through which the article is drawn. The filter is attached to the smoking article using tipping paper glued to the wrapper. When the article is smoked, mainstream smoke is produced which is inhaled through the filter. Mainstream smoke may contain a variety of components that impart a distinctive taste to the smoking article, including sensations detected not only by taste but also by smell. [0004] Many attempts have been made in the past to reduce certain components or constituents that may be contained in the mainstream smoke of smoking articles. For example, the reduction of Ho...
