Embodiment Construction

[0045] Embodiments of the present invention will now be described in detail with reference to examples shown in the accompanying drawings. Wherever possible, the same reference numbers will be used throughout the drawings to refer to the same or like parts.

[0046] The claims set forth below are incorporated into and constitute a part of this Detailed Description.

[0047] Any reference cited herein is incorporated by reference in its entirety.

[0048] In the following description, the word "cover" is used to describe wraps and rigid covers or shields generally. Accordingly, a cover is sometimes referred to as a wrap and sometimes as a rigid cover, depending on the example embodiment of the cover in question.

Abstract

Microwave drying of ceramic honeycomb segments (20) using a customizable cover (100), which may be in the form of a flexible wrap or a rigid cover, is disclosed. The cover (100) may be in the form of a wrap placed in direct contact with the leading edge (23L) of the log surface. The cover (100) may also be a rigid cover adjacent to, but not in contact with, the leading edge (23L) of the log surface. At least a portion of the trailing edge (23T) of the log may remain uncovered by having a window (114) within the wrap or by a rigid cover covering only the leading edge (23L) of the log surface. The customizable cover (100) can be configured to compensate for log shape deformation and or additionally the adverse effect of log shape caused by drying differences by passing the leading edge of the log first through the microwave drying station (60).

Description

[0001] Cross References to Related Applications [0002] This application claims priority benefit under 35 U.S.C. §120 to U.S. Patent Application Serial No. 13 / 482,367, filed May 29, 2012, the contents upon which this application is relied upon are incorporated herein by reference. technical field [0003] The present invention relates generally to extruded ceramic honeycomb segments, and in particular to microwave drying of extruded ceramic honeycomb segments using customizable covers. Background technique [0004] The process of forming a ceramic honeycomb structure involves forming an extrudate having a selected or desired shape. The extrudate was wet and referred to as the "leg". Once extruded, it is difficult to controllably change the shape of the log. However, there will be a difference between the desired extrudate shape and the actual extrudate shape. This difference can cause the log to not meet its shape specification, which requires the log to be discarded. T...
