example 1

[0060] Experiments were conducted to determine the effect of aluminum hydroxide particle size on slagging in a typical gas generant formulation. Comparative Example 1 was conventional smaller sized aluminum hydroxide particles, while Example 2 was prepared according to certain aspects of the present teachings. Table 2 shows the components and properties of the gas generants of Comparative Example 1 and Example 2.

[0064] The above two formulations were prepared separately and pressed into 0.5" diameter x 0.43" cylinders using a force of 12000 lbs. These samples were prepared by spray drying a formulation comprising guanidine nitrate, basic copper nitrate, biguanide formamide copper nitrate and glass fibers. Aluminum hydroxide of different particle sizes was then mixed into the spray-dried formulation and pressed into 0.5 x 0.43" diameter cylinders. The cylinders were then burned in a 1 liter closed tank under 3000 psi nitrogen. Altho...

[0067] The gas generants of Comparative Examples 1 and 2 described in the Background of Example 1 were also compressed into 0.25" diameter x 0.060" sheets, loaded into the driver's side automotive air bag inflator, and deployed in a 60 liter water tank middle. After deployment, the tank is flushed, and the wash water is collected. Insoluble particulates were captured on a filter and weighed after drying. Any soluble particulates were precipitated by evaporating the wash water and weighed. The total particulate escaping from the combustion filter was determined by adding together the weights of soluble and insoluble particulate found in the tank. This value is called the "tank wash value".

Abstract

Copper-comprising gas generants with improved slagging capabilities are proposed. In certain aspects, the gas generant includes a fuel, an oxidizer comprising basic copper nitrate, and a large particle size endothermic slagging component, such as aluminum hydroxide (Al(OH)3). The gas generating agent can be cold-burning, for example, its maximum flame temperature (Tc) during combustion is ≤1900K (1627°C). The present invention also presents a method of enhancing slagging for gas generant compositions comprising copper. These methods increase slagging during combustion of the gas generant composition by at least 50%.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to the enhancement of slagging capability in copper-containing gas generants by the incorporation of large particle size endothermic slagging components. Background technique [0002] This section provides background information related to the present disclosure which is not necessarily prior art. [0003] Passive inflatable restraint systems are used in a variety of applications, such as motor vehicles. For example, some types of passive inflatable restraint systems use pyrotechnic gas generating agents to inflate air bag cushions (e.g., gas initiators and / or inflators) or to actuate seat belt tensioners (e.g., micro-gas generators ), minimizing the damage to the occupants. The performance and safety requirements of automotive air bag inflators continue to increase in order to improve passenger safety while at the same time striving to reduce manufacturing costs. [0004] Therefore, increasing the functionality of the ...
