Embodiment Construction

[0044] refer to figure 1 And referring to the other figures where appropriate, an example of a bushing manufactured according to the method of the invention will now be described.

[0045] In the first step S10, a circular billet formed of AA7060 aluminum alloy is cold reverse extruded using a hydraulic press to form a shell. figure 2 An example of a casing 10 produced by this method is shown. The press includes a punch having a diameter and dome-shaped base corresponding to the inner diameter and closed base of the housing, respectively, and a mating die having a shape corresponding to the outer base end of the housing. The punch pushes the blank into the die in its longitudinal direction. The billet is back-extruded around the punch to form the cup-shaped housing 10 . The shell 10 includes a circular closed crown region 16 and tubular portions 18, 20 of uniform wall thickness. The tubular portion 18 , 20 may further be considered to include a drum region 18 and an open ...

Abstract

A method of manufacturing a liner for use in a pressure vessel includes a cold drawing process that partially shapes a transition region (20b) of an aluminum alloy liner shell (10). The transition zone (20b) connects the drum portion (18) having a thinner wall with an end region (20a) having a thicker wall, said end region (20a) being at the open top of the shell. The transition zone (20b) can be shaped by the cold drawing process such that it reduces the susceptibility of the shell to fracture during removal from the cold drawing press, but also redistributes the shell material to provide (20a) Preparation for the subsequent process of forming the threaded neck. This process is especially suitable for processing harder aluminum alloy materials, such as AA7060 or AA7032.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to the manufacture of cylindrical liners for pressure vessels. In particular, the present invention relates to the manufacture of a seamless aluminum alloy pressure vessel liner having one closed end and the other end having a threaded neck for attaching a fitting to the vessel. Background technique [0002] Pressure vessels of the type to which the present invention relates are typically used to contain fluids and gases, such as oxygen or calibration gas, usually up to a pressure of about 300 to 380 bar, but in the case of hydrogen this may be up to 700 bar. In many applications, such as portable oxygen cylinders and self-contained breathing apparatus for medical applications, drives are used to provide containers with minimal weight, which at the same time can withstand substantial pressurization and decompression without significant weakening. One solution is to provide thin impermeable liners made of lightweight mater...
