Embodiment Construction

[0135] Some embodiments of the present disclosure provide novel devices, systems and methods that benefit from CMUT technology and push the frontier of ultrasound image formation processing in ultrasound scanners. In some embodiments, a robust and highly integrated ultrasound "system-on-chip" is provided directly integrated with an ultrasound transducer array fabricated on the same die as a fully digital ultrasound front end . According to some aspects of the present disclosure, such an architecture may enable sufficient access to fully digitized channel data to allow complex image formation algorithms to be executed using state-of-the-art, off-the-shelf computer platforms.

[0136] Previous efforts in this field have largely focused on the dense integration of standard ultrasound architectures—by designing ASICs capable of standard beamforming, rather than through more advanced technologies—or on the implementation of advanced imaging techniques, often Create expensive insta...

Abstract

To implement a single-chip ultrasound imaging solution, on-chip signal processing can be employed in the receive signal path to reduce data bandwidth, and high-speed serial data blocks can be used to move data from all received channels off-chip as digital data streams . Digitizing the received signal on-chip enables advanced digital signal processing on-chip, allowing complete integration of the entire ultrasound imaging system on a single semiconductor substrate. Various novel waveform generation techniques, transducer configurations, biasing methods, etc. are similarly disclosed. The HIFU approach may additionally or alternatively be employed as part of the "ultrasound on a chip" solution disclosed herein.
