Embodiment 1
[0033] Example 1 : Preparation of an acidic aqueous extract of Wedelia (W.chinensis)
[0034] Whole Wedelia plants were dried and crushed into pieces with a size less than 0.2 cm. 250mL of food-grade acetic acid (99.8%) and 750mL of reverse osmosis water (RO H 2 O) Crushed Wedelia added to 100 g. The resulting mixture was boiled for 90 minutes and then cooled to room temperature. The boiled mixture was filtered to remove insoluble residue. The filtrate was concentrated on a rotary evaporator to a volume of ~35 mL. The concentrate was diluted with water to a volume of 1 L and evaporated again. These dilution and evaporation steps were repeated until the pH of the diluted material was above 4.0. The thus obtained concentrated acidic aqueous extract of Wedelia was mixed with an equal weight of microcrystalline cellulose. The mixture was stirred for 10 minutes and then lyophilized.

Embodiment 2
[0038] Example 2 : Preparation of ethanol extract of Wedelia
[0039] Ethanolic extracts of Wedelia were prepared essentially as described in Lin. UPLC analysis of the ethanol extract was performed as described in Example 1 above. Biological activity was also assessed as described above.
[0040] UPLC data ( Figure 1B ) and biological activity data ( Figure 2B ) shows that the ethanol extract has similar composition and activity to the acidic water extract of Wedelia.
Embodiment 3
[0041] Example 3 : Short-term treatment of hypertriglyceridemia with Wedelia extract
[0042] Five subjects were orally administered 6 g of the acidic aqueous extract of Wedelia described in Example 1 above once a day for 3 months. Serum triglyceride levels of these subjects were measured at the beginning of treatment and at 1-month intervals. The results are shown in Table 1 below.
