Embodiment Construction

[0025] The present invention relates to a cutting assembly configured to maximize the removal and clearing of obstructing or occlusive material within a body lumen, particularly the vasculature. The features of the cutting assembly of the present invention enable improved control of occlusive material removal and further ensure collection of more aggregated material units, thereby overcoming the disadvantages of current atherectomy devices which lack effective capture during operation. The ability of additional material particles to be dislodged and cause embolization of downstream vessels.

[0026] In general, the present invention provides a counter-rotatable cutting assembly for cutting occlusive material from a body lumen. The cutting assembly includes a rotatable housing having a distal end, an opposite proximal end, and a lumen extending between the distal end and the proximal end. The housing is configured to rotate in a first direction about the longitudinal axis. Th...

Abstract

The present invention relates generally to endoluminal procedures, and more particularly to a counter-rotating cutting assembly for use with an atherectomy device to remove occlusive material from an occlusive lumen, such as a blood vessel or other body lumen. The counter-rotating cutting assembly includes a rotatable housing having a distal end, an opposite proximal end, and a lumen extending between the distal end and the proximal end. The housing is configured to rotate in a first direction about the longitudinal axis. The cutting assembly also includes a rotatable cutting head positioned within at least a portion of the lumen of the housing and coaxially aligned with the housing. The cutting head is configured to rotate about the longitudinal axis in a second direction opposite the first direction.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates generally to endoluminal procedures, and more particularly to a counter-rotating cutting assembly for use with an atherectomy device to remove occlusive material from an occlusive lumen, such as a blood vessel or other body lumen. Background technique [0002] Millions of people suffer from and die from various forms of cardiovascular disease, including coronary artery disease and peripheral vascular disease (also known as peripheral artery disease). Coronary artery disease and peripheral vascular disease can result from narrowing of arteries from a condition called atherosclerosis, also known as atherosclerosis. Atherosclerosis is a progressive disease and may occur when fat, cholesterol and other substances build up on the artery walls and form thick or hard / calcified structures called plaques / lesions. As plaque builds up inside the native artery wall, the artery can narrow and become less flexible, which can make it mo...
