Embodiment Construction

[0160] In various embodiments, a novel needle electrode suitable for transcutaneous electrical stimulation of the spinal cord is provided. The needle electrodes described herein are well suited for transcutaneous electrical stimulation with low impedance and conformal electric field distribution.

[0161] Previous percutaneous electrodes have faced many difficulties in use, including, for example: 1) high electrode-skin interface impedance, which may produce skin complications (e.g., inflammation and burns), especially at high usage rates; 2) limitations that reduce overall effectiveness. edge effect issues; and 3) are less suitable for providing conformal attachment to the skin surface, especially over extended periods of time (eg, days to weeks to months).

[0162] High electrode impedance together with high stimulation current creates a requirement for high compliance voltage. Additionally, high stimulation currents operating at high voltages represent high power dissipati...

Abstract

In various embodiments, a transcutaneous needle electrode and uses thereof are provided. In certain embodiments the needle electrodes comprise a plurality of electrically conductive needles, where theneedles are solid, or where the needles are hollow and have a closed tip, where the needles have an average tip diameter less than about 10 [mu]m and an average length greater than about 20-50 [mu]mwherein the electrically conductive needles are electrically coupled to one or more electrical leads.

Description

[0001] Cross References to Related Applications [0002] This application claims the benefit of and priority to USSN 62 / 201,979 filed August 6, 2015, which is hereby incorporated by reference in its entirety for all purposes. [0003] Statement of Government Support [0004] [Not applicable] Background technique [0005] Approximately 1.3 million people in the United States suffer from a severe spinal cord injury (SCI), and approximately 12,000 to 15,000 new injuries are reported each year. About 50% of these injuries are complete spinal cord injuries, with essentially complete loss of sensorimotor function below the level of spinal cord injury. [0006] Neuronal networks formed by interneurons of the spinal cord located in the cervical and lumbar enlargements, such as the spinal network (SN), may play an important role in the control of posture, movement and movement of the upper limbs, breathing and speech. Under normal conditions, the activity of the SN is supraspinous a...
