A neural ablation system is disclosed that may be coupled to two reference electrodes that may be secured to the skin of a patient, the two reference electrodes acting as a loop of electrical current provided through a needle electrode providing ablation therapy. Because the reference electrodes are included in the ablation current path, there is a risk of heating if they are not well secured. The system includes a resistance monitoring circuit for monitoring a resistance of the reference electrode, including a measurement source operating independently of and isolated from the ablation source. A measurement source applies a voltage across a series connection of the two capacitors. A center node between the capacitors is connected to a common reference of the ablation source. The measurement and ablation sources operate at different frequencies such that the impedance of the capacitor differs at these frequencies (e.g., open or short), which provides isolation.
