Embodiment Construction

[0029] The present disclosure generally relates to an integrated optical assembly for coupling a light beam into a photonic integrated circuit (PIC) using an adjustable mirror. The assembly may include a laser source, optical components such as lenses and optical isolators, mirrors, and a PIC with an optical grating coupler for coupling the laser light into the PIC. The PIC may include a waveguide for receiving light from the grating coupler. The PIC can also include a power divider, monitor photodiodes, and a modulator for modulating the light.

[0030] A grating coupler is an optical device that couples light traveling in free space or an optical fiber into a waveguide (or vice versa). A grating coupler is a diffractive element with a finite optical bandwidth through which light can be efficiently coupled into or out of a waveguide. In addition, optical grating couplers with large mode field diameters may have narrower bandwidths. Process variations in the construction of...

Abstract

The present application relates to MEMS tilting mirrors for applications in photonic integrated circuits. An integrated optical assembly includes an optics mount. A light source for providing light beams and a lens configured to focus the light beams are provided on the optical device mounting part. The integrated optics assembly includes a photonic integrated circuit (PIC) mechanically coupled to the optics mount. The PIC has on it a grating coupler for receiving and coupling the beam into the waveguide. The integrated optics assembly includes a microelectromechanical system (MEMS) mirror configured to receive a light beam from the lens and redirect the light beam to a grating coupler. The position of the reflective portion of the MEMS mirror is adjustable to affect the angle of incidence of the beam on the grating coupler.

Description

[0001] related application [0002] This application claims the benefit of and priority to U.S. Provisional Patent Application No. 62 / 512,626, filed May 30, 2017, entitled "MEMS Steering MIRRors for Applications in Photonic Integrated Circuit," the entire contents of which are incorporated herein by reference. technical field [0003] The present application relates to MEMS tilting mirrors for applications in photonic integrated circuits. Background technique [0004] Optical communication uses modulated light beams to transmit information through optical fibers, free space or waveguides. The beam can be modulated either directly by modulating the current to the light source, or externally by modulating the continuous wave beam produced by the light source using a light modulator. The advantage of external modulation is that it can handle higher powers and frequencies; however, the required components are larger, more complex, and more expensive. Contents of the invention...
