Embodiment Construction

[0011] Example embodiments will now be described more fully with reference to the accompanying drawings.

[0012] figure 1 A temperature control system 10 for controlling the temperature of an engine 12 in accordance with the present teachings is shown. Engine 12 may be any suitable type of engine, such as an internal combustion engine. Engine 12 may be a vehicle engine, such as is used in passenger vehicles, mass transit vehicles, military vehicles, construction vehicles (or any construction equipment), aircraft, watercraft, and the like. Engine 12 may also be any suitable non-vehicle engine, such as a generator engine.

[0013] The temperature control system 10 includes a coolant flow control system 20 for directing coolant to and from the engine 12 . The coolant may be any coolant suitable for regulating the temperature of the engine 12, such as water or the like. The coolant flow control system 20 specifically circulates coolant through the engine 12 , radiator 22 , an...

Abstract

Disclosed is a temperature control system for an engine (12). The system includes a thermal storage expansion tank (24) defining a thermally insulated interior volume (26) for storing engine coolant. The system further includes a pump (34) that pumps engine coolant that has exited the thermal storage expansion tank (24) back into the thermally insulated interior volume of the thermal storage expansion tank and forces air out of the thermal storage expansion tank (24) to store coolant in the thermally insulated interior volume (26) when the engine is off.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to a heat storage expansion tank for heated engine coolant, and to storing heated coolant for use during engine cold start to facilitate engine warm up. Background technique [0002] This section provides background information related to the present disclosure which is not necessarily prior art. [0003] The coolant heat storage system stores warm coolant that is circulated through the engine to facilitate engine warm-up during engine cold start. While current coolant heat storage systems are adequate for their intended use, they leave room for improvement. For example, existing thermal storage systems maintain a set coolant volume (eg, 3 liters) at a preheat temperature during periods when the engine is off (eg, overnight). The coolant is kept warm in tanks with high insulating properties and / or phase change materials. When the engine is started again, warm coolant is allowed to circulate through the engine, helping t...
