Abstract

One aspect of the present disclosure relates to a system and method for determining the propagation delay of a signal through an optical fiber between two transceivers. The method is performed by the first network element. The method includes sending a message over the first optical fiber to the second transceiver, and the method further includes configuring the two network elements such that the first network element (NE) receives a reply message from the second NE on the first optical fiber. The reply message includes an indication of the internal time for the second NE to send the reply message. Thus, the one-way propagation delay on the first fiber can be determined. Another aspect relates to a system and method for synchronizing clocks of two NEs using a determined one-way propagation delay using a symmetric network synchronization protocol such as the Precision Time Protocol, and correcting for the one-way propagation that constitutes the round-trip propagation delay difference in latency. Some embodiments may do so while pausing (buffering) the data stream, while determining the one-way propagation delay, without halting network operations.
