Problems solved by technology

During such procedures, healthcare professionals may inadvertently ablate insufficiently the desired treatment area, resulting in only reversible electroporation in areas where irreversible electroporation is expected to occur or may wish to extend cell death beyond areas where only reversible electroporation would otherwise occur. Embodiment Construction

[0027] To prevent abnormal electrical signals in the heart that cause arrhythmias (eg, atrial fibrillation, post-infarction reentry cycles in areas of mixed scarred and healthy myocardium, etc.), healthcare professionals will frequently ablate cardiac tissue using various techniques. A healthcare professional may also wish to ablate a portion of the heart (eg, the left atrial appendage) to reduce the likelihood of expulsion of the implanted medical device. One way to ablate these cells is to use irreversible electroporation, which results in the formation of pores in the cells followed by cell death. In this regard, it is believed that electric fields cause apoptosis and / or athermal necrosis of cells receiving electrical energy.

[0028] Additional methods of cell destruction that do not damage nearby tissue may be needed if the healthcare professional is not using enough energy to properly ablate cells or wants to extend the ablation zone to cells that undergo reversible elec...

Abstract

In various aspects, the present disclosure provides methods for applying ablation therapy to a target tissue region within a patient, which methods include: (a) navigating a catheter to a target tissue region within the patient, the catheter including an elongate body having a proximal portion and a distal portion and a balloon structure positioned at the distal portion of the elongate body, whichballoon structure may be permeable to a calcium-ion-containing solution that comprises one or more calcium salts; (b) positioning the balloon structure at the target tissue region; (c) delivering energy to the target tissue region; and (d) eluting the calcium-ion-containing solution from the balloon structure before, during, and / or after delivering the energy to the target tissue region. In various other aspects, the present disclosure provides apparatuses that can be used for performing such methods, among others.

Description

[0001] Cross References to Related Applications [0002] Pursuant to 35 U.S.C. §119, this application claims priority to U.S. Provisional Patent Application Serial No. 62 / 577,824, filed October 27, 2017, which is hereby incorporated by reference in its entirety for all purposes. Background technique [0003] Atrial fibrillation is an irregular and often rapid heart rhythm that often results in poor blood flow to the body. Ablation procedures including ablation of thoracic veins, such as pulmonary veins, have been proposed as a treatment for atrial fibrillation. During pulmonary vein ablation, for example, a catheter is inserted into the atrium and energy is delivered to the pulmonary vein and / or tissue near the opening of the pulmonary vein in the left atrium. During such a procedure, a healthcare professional may inadvertently ablate the desired treatment area insufficiently so that only reversible electroporation occurs in an area where irreversible electroporation is expe...
