Abstract

The invention discloses a propulsion system (100) for an electric vehicle, and the system (100) comprises a high voltage battery unit (102) having a first high voltage battery (103) connected in series with a second high voltage battery (104) such that a nominal operating voltage of the high voltage battery unit (102) is the sum of a voltage of the first high voltage battery (103) and a voltage ofthe second high voltage battery (104); at least one power inverter (105, 106) arranged to connect the high voltage battery unit (102) and the first high voltage battery (103) to at least one electrical machine (107, 108); wherein the power inverter is configured to distribute energy generated by the at least one electrical machine to the first and second high voltage battery to balance a state ofcharge of the first and second high voltage battery.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to systems and methods for balancing state of charge in an electric propulsion system of a vehicle. Background technique [0002] An electric vehicle generally refers to a vehicle having a battery or battery cells that store energy, where the battery is designed to provide electricity for propulsion and acceleration of the vehicle and also for powering the electrical systems used in the vehicle. The stored energy is consumed when driving the electric vehicle, so the battery needs to be recharged by connecting to an external power source to replenish the stored energy level. [0003] Since the existing charging infrastructure has charging stations of varying capabilities, it has been found to be advantageous to be able to charge vehicles using different charging voltages, such as 400V and 800V. Furthermore, there are propulsion systems for operation at 400V or 800V. [0004] One solution for being able to charge at 400V a...
